New Delhi. The heat of the ongoing war in the Middle East has now reached Indian kitchens and business. The global oil and energy shortage has created an LPG crisis in India. The situation has become so serious that hotels and restaurants in many cities of the country are on the verge of closure. Oil companies have currently banned the supply of commercial LPG. This decision has given sleepless nights to the people associated with the food industry. The situation is also getting out of control in Rajasthan’s capital Jaipur. Due to shortage of commercial gas (LPG) here, more than 50 thousand hotels and restaurants are on the verge of closure.

All hotels in Puducherry may be locked till tomorrow
In Puducherry, 750 hotels are in danger of closure due to complete stoppage of supply of commercial gas cylinders. The situation is so bad that many big hotels have cut their menus. Now customers are being served only a meal like ‘kootu’ or ‘poriyal’ for lunch.
Puducherry Hotel Owners Association says that 99 percent of the restaurants here are completely dependent on gas cylinders and they have no other option for cooking. The association has warned that if the situation does not improve, then by tomorrow almost all the hotels in Puducherry may be completely closed.
Tamil Nadu Education Minister speaks on LPG crisis

Tamil Nadu Education Minister Anbil Mahesh said on the LPG crisis that ‘we have been seeing this for the last two days. Looks like the price might have increased by around Rs 60. We heard that states like Karnataka are going to vacate their hotels. Our Chief Minister will have some alternative ideas and will handle this crisis.
20 percent hotels closed in Mumbai
A huge shortage of gas is being felt in the financial capital of the country. According to the hotel association ‘AHAR’, till now 20% of the hotels in Mumbai have been closed due to lack of supply. The association has warned that if the situation does not improve, 50% of the hotels may be locked in the next two days.
Crisis deepens in Chennai too
A hotel in Chennai has announced to reduce the number of dishes in its menu due to shortage of cylinders.

Chennai Hotel Association has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking intervention. The association says that temporarily stopping the supply of commercial LPG can have a very bad impact on the restaurant and food business. Association President M. Ravi said, ‘The hotels now have enough cylinders left for only two days.
Situation in Lucknow too
In Lucknow too, hotels and restaurants are on the verge of closure due to delay in supply of commercial cylinders (Commercial LPG) for two days. Domestic cylinder, which used to arrive the next day of booking, is now taking five to seven days.
Crisis deepens in Tirupur too
In Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, 1500 cylinders are required daily, but due to shortage, now restaurants will be able to function only for the next 2 days. Due to this crisis, all types of food are not available in hotels and only ready meals like tomato rice or khichdi are being served.

50 thousand people completely dependent on hotels!
In fact, most of the hotels have the facility of gas stove only and getting permission from the Pollution Control Board to use wood stove is a big challenge. In Tiruppur, about 2 lakh people depend on restaurants every day, out of which 50 thousand people are completely dependent on food from hotels. If the situation does not change, a big crisis will arise here.
People themselves reaching the gas agency to get the cylinder
The impact of the situation in the Middle East is clearly visible in Jharkhand also. In view of the possible crisis, a rush of people was seen at the gas agency located near Sudha Dairy Dhurva in Ranchi. People were seen waiting for hours in long queues with cylinders. Although domestic gas cylinders are delivered home, now people themselves are reaching the agency in large numbers in vehicles, bikes and battery rickshaws. However, the operator said that there is no shortage of gas. The supply chain was broken only because of Holi. There were holidays in the plant and the truck was not coming. Now gas cylinder supply will come every day.
Gas has become expensive, has the government implemented ECA?
Gas prices have increased in India due to the ongoing tension between Iran, Israel and America. Domestic LPG cylinder has become costlier by Rs 60 and commercial cylinder by Rs 115. In view of the crisis, the Government of India has imposed the Essential Commodities Act (ECA) on LPG.
Oil refineries ordered to increase LPG production: In view of the current situation, the Petroleum Ministry has ordered oil refineries to increase LPG production. The ministry has said that this additional production will be used only for domestic LPG supply.

Second cylinder will not be able to be booked before 25 days
The government has taken some tough decisions for domestic consumers and institutions regarding LPG. To prevent hoarding and black marketing, there will now be a gap of 25 days between booking of two cylinders. The Petroleum Ministry has formed a special committee to address the concerns of hotels, restaurants and food industries. This committee will review and try to provide some quantity of LPG to different industries.
