But, due to fear, customers are booking more cylinders than required, which is putting a strain on the system. Normally 50 to 55 lakh cylinders are booked daily in the country. In the last few days, this number has reached 75 to 76 lakhs. With about 25 lakh additional bookings every day, the supply chain is disrupted.

Strict action against hoarders

The Central Government has held a high-level meeting with all the States and Union Territories to check illegal stocking and sale of gas cylinders at high prices. In this meeting, the Collector and the Superintendent of Police have been ordered to take action by raiding the godowns. In Uttar Pradesh, there has been a major operation to seize stolen cylinders and seal godowns in Hapur and Jhansi. Raids are being conducted on illegal storage in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. Also, special control rooms for complaints have been operationalized in many states including Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

Empowerment of Customer Service Centers

Oil marketing companies have revamped their call centers to address customer complaints quickly. The number of representatives in the call centers has been increased to 400 and more than 50 telephone lines have been made available to remove technical hurdles. Any consumer will now be able to register his complaint without delay.

Appeal to citizens

The government has clarified that the country has enough gas reserves to last for several months. So don’t create artificial scarcity by stockpiling cylinders just out of fear. The Ministry of Petroleum has also requested that the information of the brokers who are taking advantage of the shortage should be immediately reported to the administration.
