LPG crisis: Amidst the Iran-Israel war, two big Indian gas tankers have returned safely to India carrying thousands of tons of liquid petroleum gas. The ship ‘Shivalik’ reached ‘Mundra Port’ in Gujarat on 16 March. It has brought with it about 46,000 metric tonnes of LPG. Of this, 20,000 tonnes will be landed in Mundra, while 26,000 tonnes is scheduled to be sent to ‘Mangaluru’. The second ship ‘Nanda Devi’ has reached ‘Vadinar’ port of Gujarat today, 17 March 2026.

It has brought about 47,000 metric tonnes of LPG. It was initially scheduled to go to Kandla port, but was later diverted to Vadinar. Both ships safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz, a dangerous passage through the war-torn region, averting the threat of a possible gas shortage in the country. With the arrival of these ships, the supply of LPG in India is expected to normalize and the government has given instructions to take strict action against black marketing.
These ships were evacuated safely under the protection of the Indian Navy and after the permission of the Iranian authorities. Currently, 22 Indian flagged ships and approximately 611 sailors are still present in the Persian Gulf region whose safety is being monitored by the government. The total 92,700 metric tonnes of LPG carried by these two ships is enough to meet India’s total import requirement of about one to one and a half days. About 32.4 lakh domestic cylinders can be filled with ‘Shivalik’ gas alone. Apart from this, the ship ‘Jag Ladki’ carrying crude oil is also going to reach Mundra port soon.
