  • See how many tons of stock will come?

The rescue of Indian ships stuck in the Strait of Hormuz due to the war-like situation in the Middle East has now accelerated. India’s ‘Pine Gas’ and ‘Jag Vasant’ are two LPG Tankers It has successfully exited the Persian Gulf in the early hours of Monday. Together these two ships have 92 thousand tonnes of LPG stock, and these ships are likely to reach Indian ports in the next two days.

Safe passage and technical verification

According to ship tracking data, both the vessels are transiting through the Gulf between Iran’s Larak and Kishm islands. The route was used to clarify its identity and gain technical approval from the Iranian Navy’s vetting process. According to Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, it usually takes two to two-and-a-half days to reach India from the Gulf countries. So this stock will enter India by Wednesday.

A large base of 92 thousand tons of gas

The 92,000 tonnes of LPG in these two vessels is equivalent to India’s average domestic gas consumption for a day. Earlier, the vessels ‘MT Shivalik’ and ‘MT Nanda Devi’ have already arrived at Mundra and Kandla ports of Gujarat carrying 92,712 tonnes of LPG. These tankers are seen as crucial in restoring supply chains disrupted by the war.

Still 22 ships in shadow of war

A total of 28 Indian ships were stuck in the Strait of Hormuz when the war started. Of these, 4 vessels were in the eastern region, while 24 were in the western region. Although some ships have been evacuated safely so far, 22 ships and 600 Indian sailors are still stranded in the western part. These include the following vessels:

  • 7 LPG Carriers
  • 1 LNG Tanker
  • 4 Crude Oil Tankers
  • Some container and bulk carrier ships.

Strict inspection and security from Iran

The Iranian government is currently conducting thorough checks on every ship that passes through this route. The ships are being allowed to proceed only after verification of the ownership of the ship, its cargo and its connection to the US. With adequate supplies of food and drinking water currently available on the stranded ships, the central government is making international efforts for the safety and rescue of all 600 sailors.

Importance of ‘Hormuz’ waterway for India

This pathway is crucial for India’s energy security. India imports 88% of its crude oil, 50% natural gas and 60% LPG. Most of these supplies come through the Strait of Hormuz. War-like conditions affecting the route could lead to domestic fuel price hikes and shortages, hence the safe release of these vessels is imperative for India.
