LPG to PNG Transfer Voucher: Key Details Explained

In a consumer-friendly move, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has notified an important amendment to the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Order that makes life easier for millions of households transitioning from LPG cylinders to cleaner Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections.

The Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Amendment Order, 2026notified today, gives domestic LPG consumers who take a PNG connection two convenient options:

  1. They can surrender their LPG connection within 30 days of getting PNG, or
  2. They can obtain a Transfer Voucher that allows them to restore their LPG connection later in any non-PNG area.

This change is especially welcome for India’s highly mobile population. Transferable government and private-sector employees, migrant families, tenants, students living away from home, and anyone who might relocate to smaller towns or regions without PNG infrastructure can now switch to PNG without worrying about losing their LPG connection permanently.

The move is expected to accelerate the adoption of PNG, which is safer, more convenient, and environmentally friendlier than LPG cylinders, while continuing to protect consumers’ right to reliable cooking fuel wherever they live.
