Lucknow-Kanpur expressway opening: How it will reshape UP road travel?

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh is set to witness another major infrastructure push with the upcoming inauguration of the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway and the launch of two new highway projects. The developments are expected to further strengthen the state’s growing road network and improve connectivity across several districts.

Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway ready for operations

The 63-kilometre Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway has been completed at an estimated cost of around ₹4,700 crore. One of its standout features is a 42-kilometre greenfield stretch built on a completely new alignment.

The expressway is expected to significantly reduce congestion on National Highway 27, a route that often experiences heavy traffic. Travel time between Lucknow and Kanpurwhich currently ranges from 2.5 to 3 hours, is likely to drop to approximately 30 to 45 minutes once the expressway becomes operational.

Vehicles will be allowed to travel at speeds of up to 120 kmph. Proposed toll charges include ₹275 for a one-way journey and ₹415 for a round trip completed within 24 hours.

Two new highway projects approved

The Union Cabinet has also approved two major highway projects that are expected to boost economic activity in central and eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The first project is a 112-kilometre greenfield highway connecting Kanpur and Kabrai. The road is expected to be built at a cost exceeding ₹3,000 crore and will pass through districts including Fatehpur and Hamirpur.

The second project involves upgrading the existing Barabanki-Bahraich route from two lanes to four lanes. The expansion is estimated to cost around ₹7,000 crore. Land acquisition work has already begun in both Barabanki and Bahraich districts.

Economic impact across multiple districts

Officials expect the projects to improve logistics, support industrial growth and stimulate real estate activity across several districts. Areas including Kanpur, Barabanki, Bahraich, Fatehpur and Hamirpur are expected to benefit from enhanced road connectivity and faster transportation links.

Understanding greenfield highways

A greenfield highway is a road built on a completely new route where little or no transport infrastructure previously existed. Such projects are designed to reduce travel time, ease congestion and create modern transportation corridors for future growth.
