Lulia Vantur calls Arijit Singh’s decision to quit playback singing a ‘sad moment’ | Exclusive

Mumbai: Romanian singer Lulia Vantur, who sang the song Tere Sang alongside Arijit Singh, shared her experience working with him. She also spoke of his retirement from playback singing. She said that she wishes he would change his mind.

Lulia stated that she initially sang the whole song. But later, they decided to make the song a debut and thought of Arijit Singh as the potential singer. “Arijit Singh. I think we manifested strongly. He heard the song and loved it. Then he agreed to sing it,” said Lulia. She went on to how she visited the singer’s home and how warm and welcoming he was. She also talked about the recording session with the singer.

“He took us to his house and studio, and it was an amazing experience. I was a bit nervous. I spoke to him on the phone. Him liking the song was a plus. I spoke to him over the phone, but I had never met him before. He was in his intimate space, so you feel awkward because you don’t want to intrude. But he made us comfortable. He was warm and kind. He guided me, told me what he liked in what I had recorded. He told me what he thought about how I should sing this song. We tried options and decided that it would be better for my character if I sang softly and did not show any power in my voice,” said Lulia.

Further, when asked what feedback she received from Arijit, she stated, “He gave me the confidence that what I had sung initially was good. I didn’t expect that. For the second part, he told me if I go softer, it would be nicer, with more emotion. What I understood while working with him was that what you do in front of a mic is intimate because you’re bringing out your emotions. It’s a very intimate act.”

The singer-actress also said that Arijit’s retirement came as a shock to everyone. “We were shocked. We had planned to release Tere Sang around Valentine’s Day because the song is about deep love. We were planning how to release the song, and we found out about Arijit quitting playback singing. We were shaken. It was a sad moment. He has a great voice. The emotions he is able to give to a song are so unique. He is special. We were sad, but then we felt so lucky that we had the chance to have a song in his voice in our film Echoes of Us.”

However, she was glad to hear that Arijit is focused on supporting independent artists.

“It’s a beautiful thing. Artists need to express the way they want, right? They don’t want to be guided or restricted by certain rules of labels and market. Luckily, we have platforms like Spotify, Apple, etc. where you can showcase your talent. I am happy that Arijit is supporting independent music. At the same time, it’s a big loss for the film industry because movies are about feelings. I hope he changes his mind,” said the Tere Sang singer, who named the song as her favourite from Arijit’s long list.
