Maatrubhumi OTT rumours denied, Salman film for theatres
Mumbai: Speculation around Salman Khan’s upcoming film Maatrubhumi skipping theatres and heading directly to OTT platforms has been dismissed by sources close to the project.
Recent buzz suggested that the film, which has reportedly undergone changes, might avoid a theatrical release. However, insiders have clarified that the makers remain committed to bringing the film to the big screen.
Makers deny direct-to-OTT release
According to industry sources, rumours about Maatrubhumi opting for a digital-only release are unfounded. The team, including director Apoorva Lakhia, is focused on ensuring a theatrical release once pending issues around the film are resolved.
Sources emphasised that Salman Khan continues to be a major box-office draw, and the film has been mounted on a large scale, making it suitable for a cinema release rather than a direct OTT premiere.
They also pointed out that even films released directly on streaming platforms must undergo certification, countering the misconception that OTT releases bypass regulatory approvals.
Controversy and reported changes
The film has been in the spotlight following reports that it was being “sanitised”, with references to China being removed. Initially titled Battle of Galwan, the project was believed to be inspired by the 2020 Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese troops.
The teaser, released earlier, depicted Salman Khan leading Indian soldiers in combat against Chinese forces in Eastern Ladakh. The portrayal sparked criticism from sections of Chinese media, including claims that it distorted facts and promoted anti-China sentiment.
Following the controversy, the film has reportedly undergone significant changes. Its title was revised to Maatrubhumi, and references to China and the Galwan Valley have been removed. The makers are also said to be carrying out reshoots to align with the revised narrative.
Film’s theme and cast
Produced under the banner of Salman Khan Films by Salma Khan, the film features Salman in the role of an Indian Army Colonel. Actress Chitrangda Singh plays a key role alongside him.
The film aims to present a story centred on courage, sacrifice, and resilience, while also exploring emotional themes of love and family. The makers have indicated that the revised version will balance intense war sequences with personal storytelling.
No release date yet
Despite the ongoing changes and clarifications, the makers have not announced an official release date for Maatrubhumi. The timeline will likely depend on the completion of reshoots and the certification process.
Conclusion
While rumours about a direct OTT release created uncertainty, the latest update confirms that Maatrubhumi is still intended for a theatrical debut. With its large-scale production and star power, the film is expected to aim for a strong big-screen impact once its issues are resolved and release plans are finalised.
