Madhubala’s incomplete love story with Dilip Kumar, father and court case forced heartbreak

New Delhi: Madhubala, an iconic actress of Indian cinema, ruled the hearts of the audience with her career and beauty. Madhubala’s real name, born on 14 February 1933, was Mumtaz Jehan Dehlavi. Madhubala, who played romantic characters in films, was looking for love in real life too. The most talked about love story of her life was with Dilip Kumar, but its end was very sad and unexpected.
The story of Madhubala and Dilip Kumar started from the sets of the 1951 film ‘Tarana’. He was the one who started this romance. Madhubala sent an Urdu letter and roses to Dilip Kumar’s room through her personal hairdresser. It was written in the letter that if Dilip has the same feelings in his heart as she has, then accept this flower. Dilip Kumar also accepted this flower and love started between the two.

Their relationship was also seen in public many times. For the first time, both were seen entering a premiere holding hands. A journalist wrote in his autobiography that this scene would never fade from his memories. In this way their love gradually became public.

But in the year 1956, a storm came in Madhubala’s life. BR Chopra launched the film ‘Naya Daur’ and cast Madhubala in the lead role. After ten days of shooting, outdoor shoot was to be done, but Madhubala’s father clearly refused. He also refused to return the money and the matter reached the court. In this controversy, Dilip Kumar did not support Madhubala and testified in favor of BR Chopra. It is believed that there was no coordination between Dilip Kumar and Madhubala’s father.

What happened in the court broke Madhubala. She was watching her love amidst the judicial debate. Dilip Kumar said that he will always love Madhubala but their relationship got shattered between his father and the case. Madhubala later said that she could not believe that he was the person whom she loved so much. Her sister told that Madhubala died twice, first time in the courtroom and second time in real life.

The story of Madhubala and Dilip Kumar is not only a romantic story of Bollywood but it is also a glimpse of the social and family constraints of that time.
