Magh Mela 2026: When will Kalpvas start in Prayagraj? Note down all major Sangam Snan dates and important rules
New Delhi: In the Hindu calendar, the month of Magh is considered extremely auspicious and the best time for spiritual practice. According to the scriptures and Puranas, the results of chanting, penance, bathing and charity done in this month are inexhaustible, that is, its virtue never ends. For this reason, in the month of Magh, devotees from all over the country reach the Triveni Sangam bank of Prayagraj and participate in religious rituals.
According to religious beliefs, the tradition of Kalpvas performed in the month of Magh has special significance. According to Drik Panchang, in the year 2026, Magh month will start from January 4, while Kalpvas will start from Paush Purnima and continue till Magh Purnima.
What is Kalpavas?
The word ‘Kalpa’ means a fixed period of time and ‘Vas’ means to reside. Spiritually, Kalpavas is a practice in which a person remains absorbed in devotion to God by keeping distance from worldly pleasures, indulgences and illusions. In the scriptures it has been described as the practice of moving from household life to renunciation. Traditionally Kalpvas is performed from Paush Purnima to Magh Purnima, however devotees can also take a resolution of 5, 11 or 21 days as per their devotion and capacity.
Rules and method of Kalpavas
Kalpvas is not just residing on the banks of Ganga, but also following strict spiritual discipline. Kalpavasi live in thatched huts on the river bank and eat satvik, self-prepared food only once a day. Every day, ritual worship is done by taking bath in Ganga thrice including Brahma Muhurta.
Lifestyle and Ethics
Kalpavasi sleep on the ground and follow celibacy in mind, speech and action. Intoxication, anger, lies and harsh words are completely shunned. Regular worship is done by planting a Tulsi plant in the hut. The entire time is spent in bhajan-kirtan, satsang of saints and recitation of religious texts. On completion of Kalpavas, telling the story of Lord Satyanarayan, Brahmin feast and donation is considered auspicious.

First bath: Paush Purnima – 3 January 2026
Second bath: Makar Sankranti – 15 January 2026
Third bath: Mauni Amavasya – 18 January 2026
Fourth bath: Magh Purnima – 1 February 2026
period of Kalpavas
According to the scriptures, in the year 2026, Kalpavas will start from 3 January and it will end on 1 February 2026 on the day of Magh Purnima. On this day, Kalpavas of Magh month is considered complete.
