Maharashtra civic elections: BJP-Shiv Sena finalize alliance

Political turmoil has intensified in view of the local body elections 2025 in Maharashtra. The first phase of this election, which will be held in three phases, has been completed, while the date of voting on some seats has been fixed as December 20.

Mumbai: Local body elections in Maharashtra are to be conducted in three phases, of which the first phase has already been completed. However, due to irregularities in some seats, voting will now be held on December 20. Meanwhile, BJP and Shiv Sena have decided to contest elections in alliance in most areas, while other parties are contesting alone in many places.

This alliance of the two largest parties of the state is not limited only to defeating the opposition parties. Through this, BJP is believed to be trying to keep Shiv Sena under control and limit its political hold.

Maharashtra local body election outline

Local body elections in Maharashtra will be held in three phases:

  • First phase: Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections, which is almost completed.
  • Second phase: Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections.
  • Third phase: Municipal corporation elections, which include big municipal corporations including BMC.

As per Supreme Court directions, all phases should be completed before January 31, 2026. Although the official announcement of the municipal elections is yet to be made, the political strategy is already active.

Strategy of BJP-Shiv Sena alliance

The two largest parties in the state, BJP and Shiv Sena, have decided to cooperate and share seats in most constituencies. This alliance is not limited to just defeating the opposition. In fact, the BJP’s strategy is to ensure that Shiv Sena is not able to strengthen its hold in urban areas. According to experts, this alliance has been done with the aim of maintaining political supremacy and creating balance in the electoral constituencies. Keeping in mind the seats in urban areas, both the parties are together deciding which candidate will contest at which place.

According to sources, the strategy of this alliance was made after discussions and meetings at many levels. Several rounds of meetings were held between Maharashtra BJP President Ravindra Chavan and Shiv Sena Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. After this, the final strategy was prepared in the presence of the central leadership, especially Amit Shah. Under this strategy, senior leaders of both the parties will jointly distribute seats and select candidates. It is being ensured that the performance of Mahayuti in the local body elections remains strong and the opposition parties are kept in a challenging position.

At the same time, NCP’s Ajit Pawar is contesting alone on many seats. Other constituent parties of Mahavikas Aghadi are also contesting separately in the local body elections. In such a situation, the alliance of Mahayuti is being considered decisive to balance the opposition pressure.
