Mumbai21 December. The ruling alliance Mahayuti has got a bumper victory in Maharashtra local body elections, in which BJP has emerged as the largest party. The results of 288 Municipal Council and Panchayat seats have been declared across the state, in which BJP has won the maximum 188 seats. While the opposition Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) have accepted the defeat, they have alleged that the Election Commission ‘helped’ the ruling Mahayuti alliance in victory.
Maximum 118 seats in BJP’s account
If we take a look at the results, Mahayuti captured 214 seats out of a total of 288 seats. Among these, BJP emerged as the largest party with 118 seats. At the same time, among the other two allies of Mahayuti, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena has won 59 seats and NCP (Ajit Pawar) has won 37 seats. On the other hand, the opposition alliance Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA) was reduced to 49 seats. Of these, Congress had to be content with 32 seats, Shiv Sena (Ubhatha) with nine and Sharad Pawar’s NCP with eight.

Meanwhile, state Congress president Harsh Vardhan Sapkal congratulated the party candidates who won the posts of municipal president and councilor, but in a sharp comment, he also ‘congratulated’ the election body for allegedly ‘helping’ the ruling Mahayuti alliance in the elections.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut claimed that Mahayuti’s success was due to EVM manipulation and said the opposition was overwhelmed by the ‘rain’ of money during the elections. Speaking to media persons, he said, ‘If you see the assembly numbers of BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP, and now in the municipal elections, they are the same. The machines used (fixed) during assembly elections are the same. The setting (of the machines) is the same and (the way) money was used during the elections is also the same. BJP has set up the machines in the same manner as it did in the assembly elections. He should have at least changed the number of seats won.

Sanjay Raut alleged that the elections were filled with rain of money, which no one could cope with. He claimed that around Rs 150 crore was spent on the city council elections, of which the total budget is barely Rs 30 crore. He further said that chartered flights and helicopters, which were never used before for municipal elections, were used this time. According to him, the real contest was between the ruling parties and not with the opposition.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader said that horse-trading started immediately after the counting of votes. The Chairman of Shrivardhan Municipal Council, who has won on Shiv Sena (UBT) ticket, is being wooed by Eknath Shinde led Shiv Sena. He further claimed that this was a victory for the ‘terror of power’.
