Maharashtra: Rs 887 crore plan approved for world class Mumbai Marina, more than 2000 jobs will be created

New Delhi, 19 December. The Central Government has approved a plan to develop a world-class marina in Mumbai Harbor at an estimated cost of Rs 887 crore. The move is expected to provide a significant boost to coastal shipping, marine tourism and waterfront-led urban development in the country’s financial capital. The project will attract private investment and create over 2,000 jobs in related sectors, as well as open up new opportunities in coastal and blue economy activities.

This project will be implemented through hybrid development model.

The proposed ‘Vikas Bharat Mumbai Marina’ has been approved by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said, “This approval of ‘Vikas Bharat Mumbai Marina’ is an important step in our efforts to strengthen coastal shipping and marine tourism. The project will be implemented through a hybrid development model, under which the Mumbai Port Authority will invest approximately Rs 470 crore for the construction of the core marina infrastructure on an EPC basis, while a private operator will invest an estimated Rs 417 crore. Will develop coastal facilities with investment.” The Ministry has approved the investment of the Port Authority and tenders have been issued, the bids of which will close on December 29, 2025.

This project will strengthen maritime tourism – Sonowal

Sarbananda Sonowal said, ‘This project reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making Mumbai a global marina destination. “This project will strengthen maritime tourism, attract private investment and create more than 2,000 jobs in related sectors, as well as open new opportunities in coastal and blue economy activities.”

Planned over approximately 12 hectares of water area, the marina will have the capacity to accommodate 424 yachts up to 30 meters in length. The marine infrastructure will include an approach trestle, piled breakwater, service platforms, pontoons and gangways, designed to support safe and efficient ferry operations.

The onshore facilities to be developed by the private operator will include a marina terminal building, a NaMo India International Yachting School, a marine tourism development centre, hotel and club house facilities, a skill development center and yacht stacking and repair infrastructure.

The project is aligned with key national frameworks such as Maritime India Vision (MIV) 2030, Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision (MAKV) 2047, Sagarmala Program and Cruise Bharat Mission as well as Port Master Plan 2047 of Mumbai Port Authority. It aims to improve public access to the waterfront and firmly establish Mumbai as a major marine tourism and cruise traffic hub.
