New Delhi: A local suburban train derailed at Kalyan station in Thane district, approximately 60 kilometre from Mumbai, on Friday evening. The incident took place around 9pm when the Titwala-CSMT service was approaching platform number 2. No injuries have been reported so far in the incident.
According to a spokesperson for Central Railway, one of the train’s coaches derailed while the service was entering the platform. “The rear coach derailed when the train was moving slowly as it was about to stop at platform 2,” a Times of India report quoted Swapnil Nila, Central Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer as saying.
Disruptions along the mainline
The derailment caused disruptions along the mainline, with services running behind schedule due to the incident. The Mumbai Division’s Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) confirmed the delays, stating, “Due to a technical issue, mainline services are running late. We apologise for the inconvenience.”
Kalyan station serves as a critical junction for both suburban and long-distance trains. This incident comes just days after a similar derailment occurred at Mumbai Central station. In that case, two coaches of an unoccupied local train derailed while entering a car shed, leading to the cancellation of several services on the Western Railway.
Efforts are currently underway to restore normal operations at Kalyan station.
