In Mahoba, newlywed Pooja and her family were beaten up for not getting a car as dowry. The husband and in-laws are accused. All the injured are admitted to the hospital. The victims have demanded strict action from the police.
Uttar Pradesh: A family’s happiness over dowry turned into violence in Bara village of Srinagar police station area of Mahoba district of Uttar Pradesh. The marriage of the victim woman Pooja took place this year on March 2, 2025. Pooja’s father Baburam had spent around Rs 10 lakh on the wedding, beyond his means.
The victim’s family alleges that within a few days of the marriage, Pooja’s husband Babu and her in-laws started demanding a four-wheeler. When this demand was not met, Pooja started being mentally and physically tortured.
The parents who came to pick up the daughter were also attacked
On Friday, December 19, after receiving information about Pooja being assaulted, her parents and brother reached her in-laws’ house to pick up their daughter. It is alleged that during this time Pooja’s husband Babu and father-in-law Jagdish attacked her with sticks.
Pooja’s father Baburam, mother and brother Krishna suffered serious injuries in the attack. There was chaos in the village and everyone was taken to Mahoba District Hospital in injured condition.
The family asked for justice
Baburam, admitted in Mahoba District Hospital, said that he had not kept any shortage of dowry, yet his daughter was tortured. He says that if action was not taken in time, Pooja could have lost her life.
The victim Pooja has also given a written complaint against her husband and in-laws demanding strict legal action. The victim’s family has appealed to the administration for protection and justice.
Police said-the matter is serious
Mahoba District Hospital’s EMO Dr. Deepak said that after medical examination of the three injured, the report has been sent to the concerned police station.
Police officials say that the matter is serious. On the basis of the complaint and medical report of the victim, action is being taken under necessary sections. Medical examination of the accused has also been done and further legal process is going on.
Question raised again on dowry system
This incident once again raises questions on the evil practice of dowry in the society. Despite strict laws, even today daughters are being harassed for dowry.
