Jakarta: Flash floods and landslides caused massive devastation on Indonesia's Java island. So far 17 people have died in this accident, while 8 people are still missing. Officials said that 17 bodies were found during relief and rescue operations. All these people were washed away in the flood waters or buried under debris and rocks in the villages in the hilly areas. The rescue team is trying to find the missing people.
Giving this information, local disaster management head Bergus Katursari said that heavy rains caused flooding in the Pekalongan area of Central Java province on Monday. After which the flood engulfed nine villages. In the hilly areas, soil and rocks slipped from the slopes, causing many trees to fall.
17 bodies were taken out
Rescue workers said that as of Tuesday, 17 bodies had been pulled out from Petungkriyono village. Apart from this, eight villagers are still missing, the search for whom is going on. Catursari also reported that eleven people were injured, but they managed to escape and were sent for treatment to nearby hospitals.

Catursari said rescue efforts were hampered due to bad weather, landslides and difficult terrain. He said that people fishing in the river and taking shelter from the rain were washed away in the sudden flood.
