Endo has reportedly been suffering from a foot injury since late February, which he sustained while playing for Liverpool and required surgery. However, he initially appeared to have made a substantial recovery as he was included in Samurai Blue’s 26-man squad – while other star players such as Kaoru Mitoma and Takumi Minamino were confirmed to be left out.
However, he was replaced at half-time after feeling unwell in a warm-up friendly match against Iceland on 31 May, leading to speculation about his condition.
At the time, Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu said: “According to the medical report, there is nothing that suggests he cannot play.
“So we just trust, pray and wait.”
