Major LPG Cylinder Changes Effective May: OTP, No Dual Booking, & More

From May 1, 2026, the government has rolled out major changes in LPG rulesimpacting how households use and receive cooking gas.

The new framework focuses on efficient distribution, reducing misuse, and managing supply amid global energy disruptions.

No More Dual Gas Connections

One of the biggest changes is the ban on dual gas usage:

👉 The goal:

  • Ensure LPG reaches households that don’t have PNG access
  • Reduce duplication and wastage of subsidised resources

In fact, thousands of users have already surrendered extra LPG connections.

OTP-Based Cylinder Delivery

The delivery process has become stricter with mandatory OTP verification:

  • When your LPG cylinder is delivered, an OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number
  • Delivery will only be completed after sharing this OTP with the delivery agent

👉 Why this matters:

  • Prevents fraud and unauthorized deliveries
  • Ensures cylinders reach the correct consumer

Stricter Booking Rules

The government has also tightened booking conditions:

  • Increased gap between two cylinder bookings
  • Consumers need to plan refills more carefully
  • e-KYC and account verification checks are becoming stricter

This is aimed at controlling misuse and improving tracking of LPG usage.

Commercial LPG Gets Costlier

Alongside rule changes, there has been a sharp price hike in commercial LPG cylinders:

  • Prices increased by around ₹993 for 19-kg cylinders

👉 Impact:

  • Restaurants, hotels, and businesses face higher costs
  • Possible increase in food prices

However, domestic LPG prices remain unchangedoffering relief to households.

Why These Changes Were Introduced

The new rules come amid:

  • Global energy supply disruptions
  • Rising import dependency for LPG
  • Government push toward PNG adoption in urban areas

India imports a large share of its LPG, making efficient allocation critical.

What It Means for You

For consumers, the changes mean:

✔ No dual usage (LPG + PNG)
✔ Mandatory OTP for delivery
✔ More disciplined booking system
✔ No immediate price hike for home cylinders

The Bottom Line

The new LPG rules mark a shift toward tighter control and smarter distribution.

While they may feel restrictive, they are designed to ensure fair access, reduce misuse, and manage supply during global uncertainty.
