Malala reiterates stance on Gaza, rejects claims of silence

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai has reaffirmed that she has openly condemned Israel’s actions in Palestine, rejecting accusations that she has remained silent on the issue.

Speaking during a podcast hosted by singer and education activist Shehzad Roy, Malala said she had clearly labelled Israel’s military campaign in Gaza as “genocide” as early as October 2023. Her remarks came in response to persistent criticism on social media questioning her stance.

“I had said in October 2023 that Israel is committing genocide in Palestine,” Malala stated, adding that her position has remained consistent despite claims to the contrary. She stressed that she had used strong language deliberately to reflect the gravity of the situation.

Addressing the backlash, Malala said that even after posting statements on social media about the crisis in Gaza, some users continued to accuse her of staying quiet. She suggested that misinformation and selective interpretation of her comments had contributed to the criticism.

The ongoing conflict has had devastating consequences. According to health authorities in Gaza, Israel’s military campaign, now stretching into its second year, has killed more than 72,000 Palestinians, the majority of them civilians. The offensive has also triggered widespread famine, destroyed large parts of the territory’s infrastructure, and forced repeated displacement of much of the population.

Malala also pointed to a recent incident to underline her record of speaking out on humanitarian crises. She said she had quickly condemned a deadly strike on a school in Minab, Iran, last month, which resulted in the deaths of more than 175 children and teachers. Despite her response, she noted, some critics still claimed she had failed to address the tragedy.

Highlighting the broader issue of misinformation, Malala urged the public to verify claims before drawing conclusions. “My small hope is that people at least check the facts,” she said.

Her remarks reflect the challenges public figures face in navigating global political issues, where statements are often scrutinised and, at times, misrepresented. Malala reiterated that she remains committed to speaking out on human rights violations and humanitarian crises, while calling for greater responsibility in public discourse.
