A popular Malaysian singer and five others have been charged with drug possession in Thailand following an alleged attempt to smuggle over 6,000 methamphetamine pills into the country.
Wan Norsahidah Azlin Wan Ismail, 28, along with five fellow Malaysians, appeared in a Thai court on Monday, according to a report by The Straits Times.
The arrests were made on Nov. 1 during a police raid at their hotel rooms, where officers discovered approximately 6,060 meth pills in one of the rooms, as reported by The Nation.
Wan, who records under the name Eda Ezrin, rose to fame with her breakthrough hit “Cinta Setandan Pisang” released last year. Many of her fans entered Thailand to provide her with moral support, prompting local authorities to deploy force to bolster security.
The case has garnered widespread attention in Malaysia, with Malaysian police sending officers to observe the singer’s interrogation.
A police source revealed that authorities had been tracking the suspected drug ring for some time but were unable to make arrests earlier due to a lack of evidence, according to media reports.
Despite the discovery of the drugs, none of the suspects have admitted ownership of the pills. However, police sources stated that urine tests conducted on all six suspects returned positive for drug use, Thai Enquirer reported.
