There are about 2.10 lakh voters in Matabari area of Malda, out of which the protest started after the news of names of 42 thousand people being removed from the voter list. The demonstration quickly turned violent, with government properties damaged and officials targeted. Police have so far arrested more than 30 people in this case, but the arrest of Moffakkarul is being considered the biggest achievement because he was leading the mob.
Political temperature rises in Bengal before elections
This violence, which happened just before the 2026 assembly elections, has heated up the politics of the state. While Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appealed to the public not to take law into their hands, opposition parties are raising questions on the security arrangements.
