Earlier on Monday, the court of Sealdah Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das convicted Sanjay Roy in the case of rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College. On the verdict, the court commented that this crime does not fall in the 'rarest of the rare' category, due to which the death penalty can be awarded to the convict. However, the family has refused to take financial help and has appealed for justice.

Mamata Banerjee's reaction: CM Mamata Banerjee expressed dissatisfaction with the court's decision. Speaking to reporters in Murshidabad, he said that Kolkata Police was investigating the case deeply and was making every possible effort to give strict punishment to the culprits. But the case was forcibly taken away from him. If this case had remained with the Kolkata Police, the culprits would have definitely received the death penalty. Let us tell you that after the order of the High Court, the case was transferred from Kolkata Police to CBI.

He said that we all had demanded death penalty, but the court has given life imprisonment till death. We don't know how the investigation was conducted. Death penalty has been ensured in many similar cases investigated by the state police. I am not satisfied with this decision. This statement of Mamta is likely to further increase the tension between the state and the central government. The Chief Minister has accused the Center of continuously interfering in the affairs of the state. He also said that the policies of the central government are hindering the justice process.
