Mamta Banerjee’s new political move, four faces declared for Rajya Sabha, what is TMC’s big strategy?

digital desk- West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee has created a stir in political circles by announcing the names of four candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections. The party has fielded Babuv Supriyo, Rajeev Kumar, Maneka Goswami and actress Koel Mallick as candidates for the Upper House. This decision is being seen not just as a formal announcement, but as a strategy prepared keeping in mind the political equations of 2026. At present Trinamool Congress has 13 members in the Rajya Sabha. With four new seats, this number can increase to 17, which will increase the party’s strength and influence in central politics. The six-year term of the Rajya Sabha gives TMC a long-term strategic advantage, especially as the political tussle continues over the issue of opposition unity and Centre-state relations.

Babul Supriyo: Trying to woo Hindu voters?

The most discussed is about the name of Babul Supriyo. Babul, a former Union Minister and once a prominent face of BJP, had joined TMC in 2021. Despite the defeat in the assembly elections, Mamata Banerjee has decided to send him to Rajya Sabha, which is being considered a big political gesture. Analysts believe that Babul has been recognized as a popular singer and Hindu face. Keeping in mind the approximately 70 percent Hindu population in Bengal, TMC wanted a face who could counter the Hindutva narrative of the BJP. TMC had secured a notable share of Hindu votes in the 2021 elections and leaders like Babul can help the party shed the ‘anti-Hindu’ tag. His experience in Delhi politics and record of being a minister in the central government is also being considered useful for the party. His role can be important in strongly raising issues related to Bengal like flood control, industrial investment and employment in the Parliament. However, Babul has also been accused of clashing with TMC workers, due to which there is talk of some dissatisfaction within the party.

A blend of balance and youthful energy

Rajeev Kumar and Maneka Goswami are being seen as experienced and balanced faces, who represent organizational strength. At the same time, by bringing forward a popular and young face like Koyal Mallik, TMC has also tried to cultivate cultural and glamor appeal. This can give new energy to the party among the young voters and the urban class.
