Mamta government reprimanded for taking SIR officers hostage
SIR: The country’s largest court, the Supreme Court of India, has taken strict action on the case that took place in Malda, West Bengal. The court considered the incident of taking officers hostage during the SIR process as very serious. In vernacular, “Now the court has made it clear – such actions will not be tolerated at all”.
What is the whole matter?
This incident took place in Malda district, where the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process related to elections was going on. Meanwhile, seven officers—including women—were surrounded by the mob and taken hostage. The court has called it “interference in the law and justice system”.
Mamta government reprimanded
In this matter, the Supreme Court has strongly reprimanded the Mamata Banerjee government. Also, show-cause notice has been issued to the state Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and DGP. That is, “Now we will have to answer – why was action not taken on time?”.
What did the court say?
A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant said that the incident appeared to be a conspiracy to stop the judicial process. The court described it as a “serious crime committed deliberately” and said that the safety of officers cannot be compromised.

What will happen next?
Now the state government will have to answer in the court. Also, instructions have been given to the Election Commission of India to strengthen the security of the officers engaged in the SIR process. In desi style – “Now the administration will have to remain alert, otherwise the matter may become more serious”.
