Man City 'want to make Erling Haaland the HIGHEST earner in the Premier League' – but 'one stumbling block stands in the way' of the striker signing a new deal

Man City are in talks with Erling Haaland over a massive contract extension worth up to £500k per week, according to a report.

The club are increasingly confident that the Norwegian will put pen to paper on a deal that would make him the highest-paid player in the Premier League, overtaking his team-mate Kevin De Bruyne who currently rakes in £400k.

Recent negotiations between City and Haaland have reportedly been positive. As well as the proposed pay rise, the deal could see the striker extend his stay in Manchester by two years.

His current contract is up in 2027 but City want to keep him for longer, when he would be turning 28.

However, The Mirror report that there is still one obstacle in the way of the Premier League’s top scorer agreeing a new deal.

Similar to the terms of his deal at Borussia Dortmund, Haaland wants to keep a release clause in his contract which allows him to leave if a club is willing to pay his hefty transfer fee.

Currently, he has a £150million option in his contract which means City must accept any offer that matches this price.

The club want to remove this clause or at least increase it significantly, potentially up to £200m – this is a major point of contention for Haaland.

The 22-year-old would prefer to keep the possibility of him moving to another club open, especially amid rumours that the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona are interested in his talents.

Currently, Haaland’s advisers – his father and Brazilian super-agent Rafaela Pimenta – are standing stubborn in this matter.

Having a release clause in his Dortmund contract is what enabled his blockbuster move to City – to deny him of the opportunity to take another step up in his career is a non-option for Haaland.

This dilemma is particularly pertinent amid the heavy speculation over Pep Guardiola’s future.

The City boss’ contract expires next summer and there is no concrete indication that he will extend his stay.

If he were to leave, who knows how City will fare? By the looks of things, Haaland does not want to stick around and find out, hence the wrangle over a release clause in his new deal.
