A court in Malaysia has sentenced a 39-year-old man to 360 hours of community service after he admitted to making a bomb joke at Tawau Airport in Sabah.

Sabrie Nulsarie was ordered to complete four hours of community service daily over a three-month period after pleading guilty to causing public alarm on Oct. 21, as reported by The Straits Times.

In addition to the community service, he was placed on a bond of RM1,000 (US$230.60), guaranteed by a local surety.

According to the indictment, Sabrie made a remark implying that there “might be a bomb” while a police officer was inspecting the luggage of a female passenger at the airport’s departure hall on July 15. His comment prompted immediate concern, leading to his arrest, although no suspicious items were found, The Star reported.

Under Malaysian law, he could have faced up to two years in prison, a fine, or both. However, the court took into account his cooperation, which helped save judicial resources.
