A man in southern Vietnam has been summoned by police after posting a joking online comment threatening to bomb Long Thanh International Airport, authorities said.
Dong Nai Province police said on Dec. 23 that they are finalizing procedures to handle the case, stressing that the move is intended to deter similar behavior and safeguard security and public order at the airport.
The incident occurred on Dec. 17, when social media users were sharing information about the first technical test flight landing at Long Thanh airport. Using an anonymous account, the man commented: “Prepare one million dollars for me, or I’ll make the airport go boom boom.”
The comment was quickly flagged, and Dong Nai police’s internal security unit, working with other specialized departments, traced the account and identified the individual in less than 24 hours.
At the police office, the man admitted to posting the comment “as a joke,” saying he lacked awareness of the law and failed to understand the seriousness and potential consequences of making such statements.
Police said they explained that any act threatening terrorism, including comments, posts or statements made online, is strictly prohibited under Vietnamese law and will be dealt with accordingly.
Long Thanh airport, 40 km from Ho Chi Minh City, received three official inaugural landings on Dec. 19, following a series of technical test flights.
Phase one of the airport spans 1,810 hectares and is designed to handle 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo annually. Construction began in January 2021, with commercial operations expected to start in mid-2026.
