A 64-year-old man in Phan Thiet in central Vietnam awaiting a divorce set his wife on fire during an argument on Oct. 15, leaving both with severe burn injuries.

Two days later the police began an investigation into Tran Qua for attempted murder.

Late on Oct. 15 residents in an alley on Ton Duc Thang Street, Phan Thiet, heard cries for help from Qua and his wife, Truong Thi Ngo, 57.

On rushing to the scene they found the couple on fire, quickly extinguished the flames, called the authorities, and took both victims to hospital.

Security camera footage shows Tran Qua setting his wife on fire during an argument at their home in Phan Thiet in central Vietnam, Oct. 15, 2024.

Ngo had burns over 90% of her body and was transferred to HCMC for further treatment. Qua, with burns on 25% of his body – primarily his head and hands – is being treated locally.

Initial police reports indicate the couple had been in conflict for some time and were in the process of filing for divorce.

That night they argued, and the dispute escalated.

In a fit of rage, Qua poured gasoline from his motorbike on Ngo, who was sitting on a swing, and set her on fire with a lighter. Ngo was engulfed in flames and ran into the alley seeking help.
