Manav Suthar opens up on dream India debut after stellar Day 2 performance in the one-off Test against Afghanistan

Manav Suthar could hardly have asked for a better introduction to international cricket. The left-arm spinner played a key role in India‘s dominant performance on Day 2 of the one-off Test against Afghanistanhelping the hosts seize complete control of the contest. After impressing with the ball on debut, Suthar spoke about his approach, his journey to the Indian team, and the support he received from captain Shubman Gill.

When asked when he found out about his selection, Suthar said, “I found out only in the morning when we arrived at the ground.”

Explaining his thought process during the spell, he said, “My focus during the spell seemed to be on bowling in the right areas and backing my strengths. The wicket was helping, so my effort was to bowl in the right areas and hit the right length as consistently as possible.”

The spinner further revealed that the conditions perfectly suited his style of bowling. That disciplined approach paid immediate dividends as he troubled the Afghan batters throughout his spell and emerged as one of India’s standout performers.

“The wicket was offering some help and my strength is getting the ball to turn. So my aim was to extract as much turn as possible because the pitch was assisting. At the same time, I wanted to keep bowling in good areas and hit the ideal length consistently, because that was where the help was coming from. That was my entire focus,” he explained.

From domestic cricket to the Indian dressing room

Reflecting on his journey, Suthar spoke emotionally about achieving the dream of representing India.

“My journey started in domestic cricket, from Under-19 and then the Ranji Trophy. It has been very good and very special. Playing for India is a dream for everyone, and I am extremely happy to have received my cap,” revealed Suthar.

The statement highlighted the years of hard work behind his breakthrough moment and the significance of earning a place in the national side.

Shubman Gill’s guidance proves valuable

Suthar also acknowledged the role played by captain Gill, with whom he has shared a dressing room in franchise cricket. The spinner believes that familiarity helped Gill provide useful advice throughout the innings.

“Yes, possibly. Since we’ve played together, he understands my strengths and my bowling well. Based on that, he guides me regarding field placements, match situations, and the lines and lengths I should bowl,” Suthar added further.

With India firmly in command of the Test and Suthar already making a strong first impression, the young spinner has given fans plenty of reasons to be excited about his future in international cricket.
