Manchester City sign Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt

New Delhi: Former Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush, has officially joined Manchester City, the team confirmed Thursday. The Egypt international paid €70 million ($73 million) plus add-ons to go to the Etihad Stadium. The incentive payments included in the agreement total €5 million, according to certain sources. Marmoush may make his City debut on Saturday against Chelsea after agreeing to a four-and-a-half-year contract on Wednesday.

“This is a day I will never forget,” Marmoush said.

“To sign for Manchester City – one of the best teams in the world – is an amazing feeling. I am delighted, my family are so proud, and we are all very happy to be here in Manchester.

“With Pep, his technical staff and the world-class facilities here, players have everything they need to improve. That was really enticing for me when I had the chance to come here.”

He further stated that he is here to win trophies with the Sky Blues and that he is joining a winning culture and atmosphere since City have been the most successful club in England for a very long time.

Can Marmoush be the solution to Man City’s problems?

After suffering a devastating Champions League defeat, Manchester City increased their expenditure this week to almost USD 150 million by acquiring Egypt forward Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday. This transfer gives star attacker Erling Haaland some belated backup. With one game remaining in the redesigned first stage, City is on the verge of elimination after losing 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday. The squad will be hoping that the new additions can spark their season, which was thrown back into disarray.

With 15 goals from 17 games for Frankfurt this season, Marmoush is second only to Harry Kane of Bayern Munich on the German league’s top scorers list. He was on the pitch for an apparent goodbye in front of Frankfurt’s supporters after the game, but was not included in the team for the 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund due to talks with City. After joining on a free transfer from Frankfurt in 2023 from Wolfsburg, where he had only scored five goals the previous season, Marmoush’s move to City completes his quick ascent to fame.

How will he fit into the system?

It is still a mystery that how Marmoush might fit into Pep Guardiola’s strategies. Guardiola favors a lone striker in Haaland, but his finest performances this season have come when he and Hugo Ekitiké are in a two-striker system at Frankfurt. Despite his ability to play outside, Marmoush has often performed better in a center role for Egypt’s national team.

In that regard, Marmoush appears to be a comparable replacement for Julian Alvarez, the adaptable Argentina forward who, after spending the previous two years mostly in Haaland’s shadow, departed City for Atletico Madrid in August in a rumored deal worth over $103 million. However, it will be interesting to see how Pep Guardiola would fit Marmoush into that lineup, because by no means his capabilities and skills will be kept on the bench. Pep might just consider his plans in order to fit the incoming Egyptian.

“Erling is a machine – a goal-machine. I’m very excited to play with him on the pitch and to learn from him too,” Marmoush said. “Hopefully I can assist him, and we can enjoy playing together.”

This suggests that he understands his initial role in this Manchester City squad, and he isn’t expecting Pep to change his tactics just to fit him in. If we consider his talent, it won’t be an issue for the Egyptian to adapt here and make the most out of every opportunity that he gets. However, Pep needs to take his situation into consideration and do the right thing by giving him the opportunity to play his natural game to excel, or else, considering City’s current state, they can’t afford another Julian Alvarez-like loss.
