Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford set for ‘new challenge’ after poor season

New Delhi: Marcus Rashford has hinted that he is “ready for new challenge” when asked about his future at Manchester United. Rashford’s comments come after the 27-year-old was dropped for Sunday’s Manchester derby, which he noted was disheartening. United won 2-1 in the dying minutes of the game.

United manager Ruben Amorim later explained the omission of both Rasford and Alejandro Garnacho and noted that the decision was taken considering many factors. According to the Portuguese manager, he bases his decisions on performance in training and games, their discipline and how individuals engage with their teammates.

Rashford’s form this season has been at a low and has cost the forward his starting place. His off-field antics have also been in the spotlight, with former United manager Erik ten Hag dropping the English international for missing training sessions and team meetings. Last season, he was dropped from the squad that had gone to Newport for an FA Cup game after a night out in Belfast. However, Amorim has said that the duo will likely feature in the next weekend and fight for their places on a new note.

Marcus Rashford future at the club

In a recent interview, Rashford said that he is aware that the situation is poor and he hopes not to make it worse. The Red Devils forward, however, has said that he hoped that he wanted to leave the club on his terms and he won’t be leaving on bad terms with the club. While not playing in the Manchester derby was a setback, Rashford noted that he has grown as a person and that such issues didn’t bother him anymore.

Rashford has scored 138 times in his 426 appearances, debuting for the club in 2016. His 2022-23 season was brilliant as the United forward piled up 30 goals across the competition. He signed a four-and-a-half-year contract extension based on his performance for a £335,000 deal in July of 2023. However, in the last 18 months, his performance has only attracted criticism from football experts.

For now, only Paris-Saint Germain are being linked for Rashford, and he would command a sizeable transfer fee in the January transfer market period. The Manchester-born player has said that fans have misunderstood him in the light of constant criticism of him.

He has noted that he is halfway through his career, and while he doesn’t expect to peak now, Rashford noted that his nine years at the Premier League have taught him a lot. Moreover, if he is to leave, he will leave without regret.

Sources close to Rashford have said that personally Rashford has no wish to leave Old Trafford at the moment and would like to return to the starting line-up of Amorim. Rashford, though, understands that the reality might be far from such ambitions. A new boss leaving out a big name can have positive effects on the team’s performance. It is also a clear message that the player doesn’t fit in the bill of the new manager’s plans. Before their weekend game, United will be playing Tottenham Hotspur in North London for the Carabao Cup quarterfinals.
