Hallmarking is mandatory to ensure the purity of gold, new system will be implemented from January 2025: Gold HallMarking

Earlier hallmarking was applicable only to those jewelery and coins which were sold to the customer, but now with this change the monitoring of purity of gold will be made more strict.

Gold HallMarking Rule: To make gold trading in India more transparent and secure, the government has decided to implement a new system from January 2025. Under this system, hallmarking will now be made mandatory on all types of gold, be it imported gold or material purchased by jewelers. Earlier hallmarking was applicable only to those jewelery and coins which were sold to the customer, but now with this change the monitoring of purity of gold will be made more strict. This will not only control adulteration and smuggling, but will also bring transparency in gold trade, which will give customers confidence in purchasing pure and safe gold.

Experts say that this step will instill confidence in gold trade and give confidence to customers to buy pure gold. The new rules implemented by BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) will provide the government with accurate data on gold trade. This will help in knowing how much gold the jeweler bought and sold, and will also help in knowing whether there is any irregularity in the stock and sale of gold.

However, there are some challenges in the hallmarking process at present. There is a shortage of hallmarking centers in many parts of the country, due to which jewelery without hallmarks is being sold. Industry experts believe that the government should first increase the number of hallmarking centers and then implement the process completely.

The Bureau of Indian Standards has already made hallmarking mandatory on 14, 18, 22, 23 and 24 carat gold. This hallmark indicates the purity of gold. Additionally, the hallmark also includes the maker's mark and center mark of the jewelry, confirming its authenticity.

This new system, which will be implemented from January 2025, will make gold trading more transparent and secure. This will give confidence to customers in purchasing pure gold and will also control smuggling and adulteration of gold in the country.
