Indian mangoes banned in Nepal?

There were reports that Indian mangoes were banned in Nepal. After Japan, Nepal also banned the import of mangoes from India only last Tuesday. The reason given for this was that Indian mangoes are high in pesticides which can be harmful to health. However, the government has now dismissed these reports.

Statements by the Governments of Nepal and India

Both the governments of India and Nepal have now given their reactions to these reports. Calling the news completely misleading, the Union government clarified on Wednesday: “Certain media reports are claiming that Nepal has banned the import of Indian mangoes; this claim is completely false and misleading. If the ‘phyto-sanitary’ conditions are met as per the existing norms, the import continues.” In such a statement, he gave clarity on this news. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in its statement mentioned that Nepal’s ‘Plant Quarantine and Pesticide Management Center’ had clarified on June 10 that no ban has been imposed on Indian mangoes.

Where did this report come from?

Nepal has recently amended its import regulations, mandating specific measures to ensure the safety of fruits and other agricultural products. These developments fueled rumors and created a great deal of anxiety among Indian farmers as well as Nepali traders. Notably, India has exported 149 stocks of mangoes weighing a total of 2,005 tonnes to Nepal so far this year; Out of which 18 stocks weighing 266 tons have been exported in the month of June alone.
