Leadership battle in the opposition camp: Iyer told Stalin-Mamata a better option than Rahul, what is the gap in ‘India’?
BJP VS Opposition: The ongoing tug of war within the opposition regarding the candidature for the post of Prime Minister has now come out of the closed rooms and on public platforms. Senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar’s recent statement has raised concerns about ‘India’ (INDIA) has sparked a new leadership debate within the alliance.
Iyer, who describes himself as a Rajivite, has created a stir in political circles by saying that he would bet on regional satraps – MK Stalin and Mamata Banerjee – instead of Rahul Gandhi’s leadership abilities.
Iyer’s ‘Stalin’ Cards and politics of the South
At an event in Chennai, Aiyar compared Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin with veteran Congress leader K. While talking to Kamaraj, he advocated making him the face of the alliance. However, Stalin very maturely rejected this proposal saying that I know my height. This statement of Stalin indicates that at present he is more comfortable in playing the role of kingmaker rather than king in Delhi while maintaining a strong hold on power in Tamil Nadu.
Mamta’s silent support and Rahul’s challenges
On one hand, leaders like Omar Abdullah and Akhilesh Yadav consider Rahul Gandhi as the only national option against BJP. At the same time, Mamata Banerjee’s ambitions are not hidden. Mamta’s biodata is quite effective in winning the elections. He not only uprooted the Left in 2011 but has kept the BJP’s victory chariot stopped at the borders of Bengal for the last decade. On the other hand, Stalin’s strike rate (2019, 2021, 2024) makes him the most reliable ally within the alliance.

BJP’s sarcasm and internal strife
This statement of Mani Shankar Aiyar has given a sitting issue to BJP. BJP spokespersons say that when Congress’s own senior leaders have doubts about Rahul Gandhi’s acceptability, then how will the country trust him? The question now on the 2029 election board is whether the opposition will have a face’ (Rahul Gandhi) or adopt the model of regional leadership (Mamata-Stalin)? Political analysts believe that the real challenge of the opposition is not to find a face equal to Modi’s stature, but to resolve mutual differences.
