Manmohan Singh earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Economics from Panjab University in 1952 and 1954, respectively. He later completed his Economic Tripos at Cambridge University in 1957 and obtained a D.Phil in Economics from Oxford University in 1962.
Professional Career
Singh began his career as a teacher at Punjab University and the Delhi School of Economics. He held several key positions in the government, including Chief Economic Advisor, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.
Political Career
As Finance Minister in 1991, Singh introduced significant economic reforms that liberalized India’s economy, helping to avert a financial crisis. He served two consecutive terms as Prime Minister, focusing on inclusive growth and implementing social welfare programs like the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) and the Right to Information Act.
