Maposa’s black box in T20 World Cup debut, gave away 23 runs in the first over

India defeated Zimbabwe by 72 runs in the T20 World Cup 2026 match played on Thursday at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. In this match, the debut over of Zimbabwean fast bowler Tinotenda Maposa proved to be the second most expensive in T20 World Cup history.

After losing the toss, the Indian team came to bat first and scored 256 runs losing four wickets in 20 overs. Abhishek Sharma scored 55 runs on 30 balls, Hardik Pandya played 50 runs on 23 balls and Tilak Verma played a stormy inning of 44 runs on 16 balls.

Maphosa’s first over came in the third over, in which he conceded a total of 23 runs including one six, two fours against Sanju Samson. This also included one no-ball and two wides. This is the second most expensive over in T20 World Cup debut overs after Steve Tikolo’s record of 25 runs.

Chasing the target of 257, Zimbabwe was reduced to 184/6. Brian Bennett scored 97 runs in 59 balls, but the rest of the batsmen failed. Arshdeep Singh returned impressive figures of 3/24, while Varun Chakraborty and Axar Patel took one wicket each.

While this win is a great start to India’s World Cup campaign, Maphosa’s over will be talked about for a long time.
