Why is Margashirsha Purnima important?

The religious significance of Margashirsha Purnima is extraordinary for several reasons:

1. Form of Shri Krishna

The importance of Margashirsha (Agahan) month has been explained by Lord Shri Krishna himself in Bhagavad Gita. He has said, ‘Maasanan Margashirshoham’ meaning ‘I am Margashirsha in the months.’ This statement makes this month and this day extremely sacred, as it is believed that on this day one receives the special blessings of Lord Vishnu (Krishna).

2. Beginning of Satyayuga

According to mythological beliefs, Satyayuga (the first era of religion) started from the month of Margashirsha. Therefore, religious activities and charity done on the full moon day of this month yield manifold results.

3. Importance of bathing and donating

Taking bath in a holy river, lake or pond on this day has special significance. It is believed that taking bath on Margashirsha Purnima destroys all sins and brings peace to the soul. At places like Haridwar, Varanasi, Mathura and Prayagraj, devotees take a great bath on this day. Donating blanket, sesame seeds, jaggery, ghee and grains on this day is considered very auspicious.

4. Worship of Goddess Lakshmi and Moon

On the night of full moon, the moon is full of its sixteen phases. On this day, by offering Arghya and worshiping the Moon God, the Moon defect in the horoscope gets eliminated and mental peace is achieved. Margashirsha Purnima is also considered extremely auspicious for the worship of Goddess Lakshmi. Worshiping Goddess Lakshmi during Pradosh period in the evening brings happiness, prosperity and splendor in the house.

5. Lord Dattatreya and Annapurna Jayanti

On the day of Margashirsha Purnima, the birth anniversaries of Lord Dattatreya (who is considered to be the combined incarnation of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh) and Mata Annapurna (the form of Goddess Parvati) are also celebrated, due to which the importance of this date increases even more.
