Massive blow for RR as Curran faces IPL exit – Tezzbuzz

Jaipur, Mar 20: Rajasthan Royals are staring at a serious setback ahead of IPL 2026, with Sam Curran likely to be ruled out of the entire season due to a suspected groin injury.

This isn’t just another injury update — it directly hits the balance of the squad. Curran was brought in as a key all-round option, capable of delivering in both phases: finishing with the bat and chipping in with crucial overs. Losing that kind of dual-role player before the tournament even begins is a structural problem, not a minor adjustment.

The timing makes it worse. Curran was coming off a solid ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign, where he contributed with both bat and ball as England reached the semifinals. He looked match-ready. Now, RR have to rethink combinations completely.

His IPL record backs the concern — nearly 1000 runs and 59 wickets across seasons with Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings. That’s proven impact, not potential.

The bigger issue? Replacing Curran isn’t straightforward. You’re not just looking for a bowler or a batter — you need someone who can do both under pressure. That limits options immediately, especially this late.

RR now have two choices:
Either go for a like-for-like overseas replacement (which is rare and expensive), or restructure the XI and split his role across multiple players — which usually weakens balance.

Let’s be clear — one player doesn’t decide an IPL season. But losing a player like Curran before the first ball is bowled puts RR on the back foot.

And in a tournament this tight, starting behind is a problem you don’t always recover from.
