Mathew Wade shares a massive revelation which forced him to retire.
Australia were targeting to be the first cricket team in the history to simultaneously hold three world championships titles when the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which was inclusive of the West Indies and the USA, was held earlier this year. Thanks to this result, which suffered against eventual winners India inside the Super 8 stage, which was the final round robin stage of the competition, they were unable to progress any further. In fact the effect of it was so severe that stood-in wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade was already thinking about hanging up his gloves.
However, the very next day he announced his retirement from international cricket and will now assist the men’s team for the upcoming home T20I series against Pakistan as part of the coaching staff.
“It was after the loss to India that I have come to realize I can’t continue any longer. It was a realistic moment in that I finally came to terms with the fact that this was the end of the road for me. That was the hardest moment,” Wade was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.
Wade made his international appearance for Australia in 2011 and went on to play 36 Tests, 97 ODIs and 92 T20Is. The immediate emergence of Josh Inglis also forced him to make that call, Wade added.
“It was the appropriate moment for Ingo (Inglis) to come in. Look at what he’s done in the last (few months that) he’s been in the team as the No.1 ‘keeper. He was more than capable of coming in and doing that. I think they’re more looking for someone who they want to bat more top to middle order now which he fits really well,” he said
The 36 year old further reiterated that he will not be involved in the next year’s Indian Premier League season. He is presently playing for the former title holders Gujarat Titans.
“I’m doing the ILT20 which will be straight after the BBL. I’m doing (Abu Dhabi) T10, which directly leads into BBL. So, I’m going over there to Dubai at the end of this month. I have some Tassie one-dayers that I have been playing as well. I won’t be in the IPL,” he stated.
