Mathura Yamuna boat accident: PM Modi announces compensation, search for 5 continues
Uttar Pradesh A very tragic accident took place in the Yamuna river last Friday evening in the Krishna city of Mathura. A boat carrying pilgrims from Ludhiana, Punjab capsized and sank in the Yamuna river. So far 10 people have died in this accident, including 6 women. Still 5 people are reported missing. Rescue work continued on Saturday also. NDRF and SDRF teams are busy searching for the missing people. The accident happened near Keshi Ghat, about two and a half kilometers away from Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of condolence and help
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow over this accident. He has expressed condolences to the families of those who died. PM Modi has announced that the family of every person who died will be given an assistance amount of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. Those injured in the accident will be given an ex-gratia amount of Rs 50,000 each. PM Modi has also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

President Draupadi Murmu has also expressed grief over this accident. He wrote on the X handle that the news of death of many people in a boat accident in Uttar Pradesh is very sad. He expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.
What happened in the accident?
A total of 132 devotees from Punjab and Haryana had come on pilgrimage to Braj region. At around 2.30 pm on Friday afternoon, these people reached Keshi Ghat to take a boat ride to Devraha Baba Ghat. Here he rented a motor boat. Initially 43 people boarded a boat. Later the driver sent 6 people to another boat, leaving 37 people on this boat. When the boat reached near the pontoon bridge built between Mant-Vrindavan, the passengers saw that the bridge was being removed with a JCB machine to clean the mud. It became difficult to move forward. As soon as the driver tried to turn the boat, a part of the pontoon bridge collided with the boat. The boat became unbalanced and overturned and started sinking in the Yamuna river.

Six devotees were rescued in the accident and taken to the Joint District Hospital of Vrindavan. One of them died on reaching the hospital, while the remaining five injured have been admitted and are undergoing treatment.
What action did the government take?
District Magistrate CP Singh has ordered a complete investigation into the accident. The investigation will be done by ADM (Finance and Revenue). The DM said that whoever is found guilty, strict action will be taken against him. He also said that: Complete treatment of the injured will be provided by the government. The bodies of those who died will be taken to their homes in Punjab in government ambulances. Post mortem of dead bodies is being done with videography. After the post-mortem, two Naib Tehsildars and four Lekhpals will go to Punjab with the bodies so that they can be handed over to the families quickly.
