Shahabuddin Razvi told that some people have asked him the question whether celebrating the New Year is justified or illegitimate. In response to this, Maulana said that celebrating the New Year is illegitimate in the light of Shariat. He told that the year of Islamic calendar starts from the month of Muharram. Similarly, the year of Hindu calendar starts from the month of Chaitra. It is European culture to celebrate New Year on 31 December or 1 January.

Maulana said that in the name of New Year celebrations, there is mischief, noise, ruckus, dancing and singing on the night of 31st December. All this is wasteful expenditure. All these things are not allowed in Shariat. Wasteful expenditure has been declared illegitimate in Shariat. Therefore, Muslim boys and girls should not celebrate the New Year. If news of celebration is received from anywhere, the Ulama will strictly stop it.
