Mbappe Shines as France Defeats Sweden 3-0 in World Cup

Kylian Mbappe highlighted his continued impact in dismantling opposition defenses following France’s 3-0 victory over Sweden at the New York New Jersey Stadium (MetLife Stadium), securing Les Bleus’ place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

A clinical double from the talismanic captain steered France to a commanding win, maintaining their strong momentum in the tournament.

Mbappe wrote on Instagram: “Another rival sent off with a receipt! France wins against Sweden, and Kylian Mbappe is again doing what he can do best – sowing chaos in the defense of rivals.”

Didier Deschamps, who returned to the touchline after missing the final group game due to personal bereavement following his mother’s funeral, witnessed his side systematically dismantle a stubborn Swedish defence.

Mbappe’s goals in the 45th and 74th minutes brought his total to 10 career knockout stage goals, surpassing the previous record held jointly by Brazilian icon Ronaldo and legendary pre-war forward Leonidas, who each had eight.

His ability to perform at critical moments has characterized his international career. Mbappe’s sixth goal of the tournament also brought him level with Argentina’s Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.

The brace raised Mbappe’s World Cup goal tally to 18 in 18 appearances, placing him one goal behind Messi’s all-time record of 19 goals, which was achieved over 29 World Cup matches.
