Now the way is clear for quick entry in MBBS! Limit of 150 seats ended, lakhs of students will get benefit
National Medical Commission (NMC) MBBS There has been a big change in its rules regarding seats. Now the Commission has permanently removed the maximum limit of 150 MBBS seats and the rule for determining seats on the basis of population. After this decision, medical colleges will no longer be bound by these restrictions like before and will be able to admit more MBBS students.
That is, it is going to directly benefit the students, and it can also be expected that the cutoff for medical and competition for seats is also going to reduce.
What decisions did the government take?
The Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of NMC has taken several decisions through an amended notification published in the official gazette on 23 April 2026. Under which, changes have been made in “Establishment of new medical institutions, starting of new medical courses, increase in seats in existing courses and Rule 19 of Evaluation and Rating Rules 2023 (UG-MSR 2023)” and Graduate Medical Education Regulation 2023. These rules were first notified in the Extraordinary Gazette of India on 16 August 2023.
Earlier, NMC had postponed the maximum limit of 150 seats per medical college in MBBS course for another academic year. But now with the new amendment this limit of 150 seats has been completely abolished. Along with this, the rule determining the ratio of seats on the basis of population has also been removed from the rules.
What was the provision earlier?
Earlier in Chapter I of UG-MSR 2023, there was a provision that colleges that want to increase the number of seats cannot exceed the total of 150 MBBS seats from the session 2025-26. Along with this, there was also a condition that the ratio of 100 MBBS seats per 10 lakh population would have to be maintained in the concerned state or union territory.
What does the new amendment say?
According to the new amendment, now medical colleges will not be bound by the limit of 150 seats and they can apply for more seats as per other prescribed standards. Similarly, the requirement to maintain the ratio of 100 seats per 10 lakh population in a state or union territory has also been abolished.
In the notification issued by NMC Secretary Dr. Raghav Langer, it has been clearly stated that the provision under Chapter I of UG-MSR 2023 has been removed. Along with this, the provision of 100 students for a population of 10 lakh has also been abolished.
And which rules were amended?
Apart from this, NMC has also amended the rules regarding the distance between the medical college and its associated hospital. The first rule stated that the distance between the college and the hospital should be such that it would take a maximum of 30 minutes to reach there. Now according to the revised rules, the maximum distance between the college and the hospital has been fixed at 10 kilometers. At the same time, for the states of North-Eastern region and Himalayan states, this maximum distance has been fixed at 15 kilometers.
In this way, important changes have been made in the structure of medical education under the new rules, which is being considered as a big step towards increasing seats and giving flexibility in the structure to medical colleges.
