MCC rebukes Salman Ali Agha for strange run-out against Bangladesh, stands by Mehidy Hasan
The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has criticised Pakistan batter Salman Ali Agha for his controversial run-out in the second ODI against Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. The MCC said that a batter should never pick up the ball without the approval of the fielding side.
The incident happened in the 39th over of Pakistan’s innings when Bangladesh skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz collided with the rival batter, who was out of the crease. Agha gave the ball to Miraz, who dislodged the bails.
Miraz’s appeal was referred to the third umpire, who declared the batter out as the ball was still in play.
The MCC stated that Agha was out under the Laws as he was outside the crease. It also noted that Bangladesh could have also appealed for Obstructing the Field.
“This was out under the Law. The non-striker was out of the crease when the wicket was broken, and the ball was in play,” MCC said in a statement.
“The batter picked up the ball without the consent of the fielding side, and there was also a risk of an Obstructing the field dismissal. He should have used the time to return to the crease,” the MCC added.
After the match, Agha said that he wouldn’t have done the same had a rival player been out of the crease.
The MCC said that Bangladesh had every right to dismiss the batter or withdraw the appeal.
“Mehidy, who is the Bangladesh captain, had the right to withdraw his appeal. Agha thought the ball was dead and was trying to assist the fielding side. The Laws allow a team to withdraw the appeal despite the batter being out in Law if they feel to uphold the Spirit of Cricket,” the MCC mentioned.
Agha reacted angrily and was seen throwing his gloves and helmet away in the dugout, leading to punishment from the ICC.
