MCD and Delhi Police start joint campaign against illegal parking, emphasis on multi-level facilities
New Delhi, June 4. To reduce the traffic problem and roadside congestion in Delhi, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has started a big campaign in collaboration with Delhi Police. This awareness and strictness campaign is being run around selected multi-level parking places in the capital from Thursday. The aim of this campaign is to inculcate the habit of responsible parking among the people, so that the roads remain clean and the traffic becomes smooth. The aim of the campaign is to convince drivers to use designated parking spaces instead of parking their vehicles randomly on roads, service lanes, footpaths, carriageways, no-parking zones and other public places.
Officials said the objective of this initiative is to ensure maximum utilization of existing parking facilities and also maintain smooth traffic flow in busy commercial and residential areas. The drive will initially focus on six multi-level parking spaces identified across Delhi, Spark Mall (Kamala Nagar), M-Block Market (Greater Kailash-I), Hauz Khas, Qutub Road, Nizamuddin Basti and Parade Ground. According to officials, adequate parking facilities are available at these places.
However, it has been observed that many people still park their vehicles in nearby areas where this is not allowed. These include roadsides, market entrances, footpaths and other restricted zones. Such violations often hamper the smooth movement of pedestrians, emergency vehicles and traffic. Under this campaign, Delhi Traffic Police and MCD employees will jointly control the parking system and take action against those who violate the rules. Apart from strict enforcement measures, the authorities will also run awareness campaigns to educate the commuters, residents, shopkeepers and market unions about the benefits of using designated parking facilities.
Appealing for cooperation from the public, the MCD Commissioner urged the citizens to make maximum use of the multi-level parking facilities. Proper use of these facilities will improve traffic management, provide more convenience to the public and promote civic discipline in the entire city. Similarly, the Special Commissioner of Police appealed to the motorists to avoid parking their vehicles in restricted areas and use the available parking facilities. He warned that strict legal action would be taken against vehicles found parked illegally near identified parking facilities.
According to the law, Delhi Traffic Police can challan such vehicles, clamp their wheels or tow them. Wherever necessary, the concerned agencies can take further measures to strictly enforce the rules. Officials stressed that the aim of this initiative is not just to ensure strict enforcement of rules, but also to bring about a long-lasting change in the behavior of road users. Delhi Police has appealed to citizens, commuters, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), market associations and shopkeepers to actively cooperate in making these areas safer, more accessible and free from unnecessary congestion.
Drivers have also been advised to plan their journey in advance and use only designated parking facilities to avoid traffic jams. Officials said proper utilization of the available parking infrastructure will significantly improve road discipline, reduce congestion and ease movement for pedestrians, shoppers, residents and daily commuters. This campaign will continue in the coming weeks, and strict action will be taken against those who repeatedly violate the rules and keep parking wrongly around the marked spaces.
