McLaren has revealed its latest hypercar, dubbed the “W1,” which is scheduled to debut on October 6. This launch date is particularly significant as it marks the 50th anniversary of McLaren’s first Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship and Emerson Fittipaldi’s F1 Drivers’ Championship victory in 1974.
The new hypercar’s name, W1, pays homage to McLaren’s winning legacy in the world of motorsport, celebrating its “World Championship mindset.” The announcement comes with a teaser video released by McLaren, showcasing iconic predecessors like the F1 and P1, along with the W1’s bold new logo.
A Legacy of Hypercars
McLaren’s W1 will be the first major hypercar since the legendary P1, which was unveiled in 2012. The P1, alongside the Porsche 918 Spyder and Ferrari LaFerrari, formed what has been referred to as the “Holy Trinity” of hybrid hypercars. With a hybrid twin-turbo V-8 engine delivering 903 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, the P1 set a new benchmark for performance. However, none of these models have had the same groundbreaking impact as the P1, or the F1 before it.
