Jensen Huang, the founder and CEO of Nvidia, is a self-made billionaire who is now the 11th richest person in the world, surging ahead of Indian business tycoons, Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani, according to Forbes. Currently, Huang has an estimated net worth of over $124.3 billion.

Jensen Huang’s astonishing rise in personal fortune has been due to the remarkable growth of Nvidia which has surged past tech giants like Apple, Microsoft, and Tesla, and now boasts a market cap of around $3.3 trillion. At present, Nvidia is regarded as the world most valuable publicly traded company with its shares climbing by 3.4%.

Nvidia’s stock, which accounts for about 16% of all trading activity among S&P 500 companies, is the most traded on Wall Street, averaging a daily turnover of over $50 billion, which is significantly larger than the $10 billion turnover registered by its competitors such as Microsoft, Tesla, and Apple.

Who is Jensen Huang?

Born in a middle-class home in Tainan, Taiwan, in 1963, Jensen Huang was five years old when his family relocated to Thailand. However, as civil unrest mounted in Thailand, the family sent Huang, who was nine at the time, and his brother to live with their uncle  in Tacoma, Washington in the United States.

After completing his primary education at Oneida Elementary School in Kentucky, Jensen graduated from the Aloha High School near Portland and started working as a waiter or server at a Denny’s restaurant. Later, Huang earned a Masters degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University and started his career by working for LSI Logic and AMD.

The birth and rise of Nvidia

In 1993, during a casual meeting at a Denny’s diner in San Jose, the idea of Nvidia was born, and soon Jensen Huang co-founded the company with Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem. Huang has helmed Nvidia since its founding, a rare feat in Silicon Valley where founders often step aside and hand over reins to new leaders.

However, Huang has served as the CEO of Nvidia for over 30 years and propelled the graphics-chip maker as the dominant force, first in computer gaming and now in AI. Nvidia is especially capitalized on the AI boom, soaring past goliaths like Microsoft, Apple, and Elon Musk’s Tesla, and becoming the most valuable publicly-traded tech company in the world.

The rise of Nvidia is a testament to the hard work and genius of Jensen Huang, a man who started his journey from humble beginnings to become one of the wealthiest individuals in the world today.
