Dr. Prathap C. Reddy earned his MBBS degree from Stanley Medical College in Chennai and later went to the United States to specialise in cardiology. He returned to India after receiving a letter from his father that had a significant impact on him.

In 1979, a man lost his life because he was unable to travel abroad for cardiac surgery, and this incident became a catalyst for Dr. Reddy. The incident highlighted a dearth of world class hospitals in India and Dr Reddy decided to open a hospital with the help of government and the then prime minister Indira Gandhi. He founded Apollo Hospital in Chennai, a groundbreaking establishment dedicated to cardiac surgery and other specializations.
