Ajay Piramal is known for his expertise in acquiring and selling companies, as well as merging them. In 1984, he acquired Gujarat Glass Limited. That same year, he decided to exit the textile business and enter the pharmaceutical sector.

As per media reports, in 2010, US-based Abbott Laboratories acquired the pharmaceutical solutions division of Piramal Healthcare for $3.72 billion (Rs 17,500 crore), marking the second-largest deal in the history of the Indian pharmaceutical sector. Later in 2020, he sold his glass manufacturer Piramal Glass to private equity firm Blackstone for $1 billion.
