KV Kamath, a Padma Bhushan awardee, is a distinguished figure in the business world. Known for his leadership and expertise, Kamath previously served as the Managing Director of ICICI Bank and later became the Chairman of Infosys, succeeding Narayana Murthy. He was also the first president of the New Development Bank, an international financial institution established by BRICS nations.

Currently, Kamath holds the position of Chairman of the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID), a vital organization in India’s infrastructure financing landscape.

KV Kamath Early Life and Education

Born on December 2, 1947, in a middle-class family in Kundapur, Mangaluru (Mangalore), Karnataka, KV Kamath’s journey is one of perseverance and brilliance. He completed his schooling at a Kannada-medium government school in his hometown and later passed his Pre-University Course (PUC) from St. Aloysius College.

Kamath pursued his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Karnataka (then known as Karnataka Regional Engineering College), graduating in 1969. He then earned a Post Graduate Diploma in Management from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), further solidifying his foundation in business and finance.

Kamath’s Role in Mukesh Ambani’s Success

KV Kamath played a pivotal role in Mukesh Ambani’s meteoric rise following the 2005 split in Reliance Industries between Mukesh and his younger brother, Anil Ambani. Kamath became one of Mukesh’s trusted advisors during this period, offering valuable financial guidance that helped Mukesh consolidate and expand his business empire.

Reports suggest that Mukesh Ambani sought Kamath’s counsel during the tumultuous phase of the sibling feud. Kamath’s insights and financial acumen were instrumental in transforming Reliance into a global giant, positioning Mukesh Ambani as one of the world’s most successful business leaders.

Association with Reliance and Jio Financial Services

In 2022, Mukesh Ambani officially brought KV Kamath into Reliance Industries, entrusting him with the leadership of Jio Financial Services (JFS). Formerly a subsidiary of Reliance, JFS became an independent entity in August 2023 under Kamath’s stewardship.

In addition to heading JFS, Kamath serves as an Independent Director of Reliance Industries, currently valued at over ₹2 lakh crore, making it the world’s 48th most valuable company.

KV Kamath’s contributions to the financial sector earned him the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honor, in 2008. His journey from a small-town boy in Karnataka to a global financial leader is a testament to his vision, hard work, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
